The Purpose of Luke’s Gospel
There are so many voices in our world today. News outlets, podcasts, social media, friends, family. Everyone has a version of the truth. Sometimes it feels impossible to know what to believe. When everything feels confusing, what we long for is clarity.
That is exactly how Luke begins his Gospel. He tells us he has carefully investigated, spoken with eyewitnesses, and arranged the story so that we can be certain of what we believe. He wants to give us confidence.
I need that. There are days when my faith feels surrounded by questions and doubts. I need to know my faith is not built on rumors or wishful thinking. I need something solid to stand on.
And you do too.
We all live in a culture that questions everything, including the Bible itself. Is it reliable? Did these things actually happen? Can I really build my life on this?
Luke says yes. He tells Theophilus and us, “I want you to know the exact truth.” He is saying, this story is not a legend. It is not a myth. It is the truth, rooted in real history, passed down by real people who saw and heard Jesus with their own eyes and ears.
Here is what Luke makes clear in these four verses:
- The Gospel is rooted in history. Others had already written about Jesus because something extraordinary had happened that demanded recording.
- The message comes from eyewitnesses. Christianity begins with events that people saw and experienced, not abstract ideas.
- Luke carefully investigated. As a doctor, he was trained to pay attention to detail. He checked the facts. He followed the story closely.
- The goal is certainty. Luke’s purpose was to give assurance so that our faith is not blind, but confident and secure.
So what does this mean for you?
- If you are doubting, Luke invites you to lean in. He wrote to answer your questions with clarity.
- If you are drifting, Luke is a lifeline. His words will steady you and call you back.
- If you are hungry, Luke is a feast. Every story was preserved so you could be strengthened and built up in the truth.
Your step today is simple. Choose Luke as your anchor. Make the decision that you are not just going to skim this Gospel. You are going to read it slowly, receive it as truth, and let it reignite your faith.
